As a professional game character modeler, I've just got to say that you people are INSANE!
Comments like this make artists want to pull their hair out. Seriously.
NONE of those things are what you said they are, unless (and this is always possible) you are horribly abusing the term "re-skinned".
"Re-skinned" should, properly, refer to applying a new texture to an existing model, without changing the model itself.
If you people can't see the difference between the Harpy model and this new Fleshreaver, or the Krait and an Iboga, I really can't help you, but maybe an optometrist could.
PS: I'm quoting you, Skye Marin, but my comments are directed toward a lot of people in this thread.
Now pardon me while I go pull my hair out (some more).

In the software buisness, 90% or more of the new products are recycled software of older versions. Antivirus software, for instance, the 2007 version is just the 2006 version re-skinned, with some tiny new feature etc.
Applies to all software companies.
PS: THAT is why GW2 is still so far along; they have to create new models for all the stuff that there's gonna be in it due to a totally different engine. So if you're not buying GW:EN just for that, then you shouldn't have bought factions or nightfall either.

Krait look good, but nothing particularly stunning about those creatures. Chances are, they'll act very similar or identical to their "cousins" or counterparts in previous chapters. Unless there's something new except their looks, it's nothing to get excited over.

Perhaps I didn't make myself clear.
Those of us who work our butts off all day long to bring you unique, wonderful-to-gaze-upon monsters are feeling the urge to strangle someone, right about now.

When was the last new model you saw in the game? Abaddon? Dervishes? Paragons? Cause that is probably it. I would expect some new models in GW2 but not in GW:EN. As has been pointed out before, 95% of the new monsters in the last 2 campaigns have been reskins of old models.
If they worked so hard to develop new models for new campaigns and expansions, then what new models would they add for GW2? Once they decided that GW2 was gonna be made, i guarantee you most of the models they had already designed were set aside for GW2. The biggest thing I and probably most of the GW palyers out there are looking forward to in GW:EN is the stroyline and where its gonna take us and the new races, and Gwen, and who the Great Destroyer is and all that. New character models are not very high on that totem pole. Adding new skins in a new Campaign is a good idea, but in an Expansion Pack its not a big deal.

Exactly put. There are a lot of talented artists out there with a lot of amazing work that could have incorporated into GW:EN instead of recycled skins. But Anet dont want to pay out any more money by the look of it.
|
No, no, no, no, no, no, no, NO.
Obviously I wasn't clear.
The thing that makes artists "feel the urge to strangle someone" is the bitching, complaining, and whining about so many models being nothing but cheap reskins when NONE of them actually are.
If you don't like the designs, fine, but if your eye is so bad that you think these are "recycled skins", then you don't have any right to voice an opinion on this subject at all.
The designers and modelers at Anet are extremely talented, and the new (NEW, dammit!) models are nice, as always.

The Fleshreavers may look similar to Harpies and the Krait similar to Naga/Forgotten... but at least they look different and will have new skill bars.
But seriously wtf is with the Ice Wurm? Its not a 'distant cousin'. Its a Frost Wurms identical twin! They would've been better off not releasing info on Wurms. People are just gonna hold it against them if they try and pass it off as something new, because if 1 thing has stayed the same... its the wurms.

They are reusing animation sets and rigging (which is imo what takes the longest). Theres actually very few reused models, except for the Non-ascended vs Ascended versions of some armors.
Even within creatures that use the same animation sets, they use different models.
....
Theres also a need to maintain thematic consistencies across chapters.
Wurms exist in all the games. Little things like this make the games more connected. Its one world.
Even in the REAL world, different creatures fill in specific environmental niches and have similar looks, thanks to similar, even if they are different animals.

dang people all you do is complain......I hope that you realize that these are just "teasers" the really new monsters and NPCs they will implament into the game without showing them to u first.
so just chill out and quit complaining.
btw I think these new characters look cool and colorful (and of course they put another wurm in cause everyone HATES them with a passion)
lookin forward to GW:EN

Yep, exactly.
There is a lot of animation sharing, like Ghouls and Grasps, but the models are almost always new.
And yeah, I'll agree. Time-wise, it's animating that's the big job. Thankfully, that's not in my job description. ^_^

No, they really don't. Like Lyra said, some 15k armors are, but I can't think of a single creature, off the top of my head, that's a straight reskin.
Heck, I used to think that the Tyrian tree thingys (you know, like Ancient Oakhearts and Pine Souls) were reskins, but they actually have different models.
I'm starting to find this thread really entertaining. Even the people that agree with me don't agree with me. ^_^

Well i agree with you the most since most of these people have no idea what there talking about, but this thread is really entertaining.
